Jumma indigenous people, Bangladesh, 1979

A father and son of the Jumma indigenous people of Bangladesh, photographed in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, bordering India and Myanmar.

The photo was taken in 1979, when an insurgency was underway led by the Shanti Bahini group. The insurgency was sparked by displacement the Jumma people from the Hill Tracts, and settlement of Bengali people in the region.

Successive Bangladeshi governments fought the Shanti Bahini until a peace accord was reached in 1997.

Today, the Hill Tracts have semi-autonomous status.
