This is a hand-made clay figurine from Zimbabwe of a helmeted guineafowl (Numida meleagris). Measuring about 8cm x 11cm, it was purchased in the late 1980s from a roadside stall in the Lake Kariba area, near the border with Zambia.
Helmeted guineafowl are a common game bird in sub-Saharan Africa. They are about the size of a very large chicken.
